#Backchannel Reinvents TV Newscast

When was the last time you actually enjoyed watching a newscast?

When was the last time you got to talk to newscasters during the newscast?

When was the last time you got talking news via social media with people who were also watching the same newscast as you?

Never?  Really?  Wow, you have been definitely missing out on the fun of the backchannel!

This is the best way to hear what the backchannel is all about from Charlie Wollborg (@CharlieCurve) with his behind the scenes of a day of Stephen Clark (@SClarkWXYZ) during a newscast on Twitter (@Twitter).

Yet experiencing it is a whole different in itself, I will admit I am not one of those people who works their social calendars around the newscast, lately I have been to see what my new friends via the backchannel have to say about different segments.  I have even started to talk to people away from the newscast, it really does make it even more enjoyable.

What brought me to join in the fun?  The answer is easy, tweeting with Clark before and even after newscasts.  I have had some great interactions with many different reporters from WXYZ Detroit including Alicia Smith (@WXYZAlicia) and Erin Nicole (@ENicole19) from the morning wake up crew and from the evening crew with Clark, Dave LewAllen (@tvnewzguy, Tom Leyden (@TomLeyden), and Christy McDonald (@ChristyWXYZ).

What has me coming back?  It is people I have met, it really has been fun, like I stated earlier in this blog talking to people away from the newscast.  People like @jfavreau @onederlnd @MGrosvenor and @dwnonmainstreet really are fun to tweet with along with many others getting their opinions on the different segments and their lives away from the backchannel.

Now I need to talk about something I have been hearing about about.  The #EarlyRisers also known as the early backchannel which Alicia Smith runs every morning has been talking to smack to about us evening news watchers.  I am a huge fan of the morning staff, so I am not going to talk smack, knowing it is all in fun, yet I think the morning viewers and tweeters should show respect to the man who brought the idea and fun to all of us.

Thank you, Stephen, WXYZ, and all of the #Backchannel family for the fun!

  1. HI Stacie,
I think what the anchors at Ch 7 are doing with the #EarlyRisers and #Backchannel creates such an amazing connection with viewers. Because of my schedule, I'm an #EarlyRiser person, but certainly give Stephen Clark his due props! I'm a much more engaged viewer. Thanks for the great post!

  2. Hey Kenn!
I agree with you totally, I was tweeting with a newbie on the #Backchannel today and we really love the way it brings everyone together. Never would you have been able to do that without the introduction of the #Backchannel and now the #EarlyRisers! It has definitely brought me back to being a viewer of the news!

  3. I am not one of the #EarlyRisers but thanks for pointing out the hash tag. I really enjoy what Tom Leyden and Stephen Clark are doing. I haven't had much interaction with anyone else. The #Backchannel was great when I was in DC and I was finding out what was going on in the D. I love it thanks for mentioning me.

  4. I am definitely not one of the #EarlyRisers either, Jamie, but I am a huge fan of Alicia and Erin. And you are quite welcome, I am glad to get some more followers for them and maybe grab some new ones for #Backchannel.
